By October, the team visited the National STEM Learning Centre to explore motorsport and secure sponsorship. Their persuasive pitch secured funding from Mercia Media, supporting their ambitious project.

Throughout the autumn and winter, the kart steadily took shape with after-school sessions every Monday after school.  January 2025 featured a personalised build experience with Adam from STEM on Track, who guided the team through key technical challenges, including chain tensioning and graphic design.

By March and April, the kart was nearing completion, with expert help from caretaker Mr Smirk in applying vinyl decals. Final adjustments included wheel alignment and race livery application. The kart was ready for its first test race in early May.

On 6th May, the team travelled 150 miles to Whilton Mill Karting Track for the test event. After passing scrutineering with minor adjustments, the kart’s engine was started for the first time, marking a major milestone. Drivers passed safety exams and took practice runs on course karts before testing their own build on the track.

Team members expertly managed the pits and trackside operations, ensuring a smooth day. Although one driver missed testing, all are poised and ready for the grand final this Saturday.

Race Day Itinerary - Saturday, 14th June 2025

• Arrival - 9.00am
• Safety briefing - 9.30am
• Scrutineering between 10.00am and 12.00am. This will be quickly followed by the fitting of the transponder and filling with fuel. Tyre pressures and oil level will also be part of the checks.
• Professionally led track walk between 10.00am and 10.30am 
• Retro Karting demo - 11.00am
• Karting for non-drivers - 11.30am 
• Qualifying between 12.00am and 1.00pm. This will be used to determine the position on the grid.
• Groups A&B Race 1:45pm 1-hour session where all four drivers must take part, most laps determines the winner. In the event of a tie – fastest lap takes it.
• Groups C&D Race 3:15pm 1-hour session where all four drivers must take part, most laps determines the winner. In the event of a tie – fastest lap takes it.
• Trophy/Awards - 4.30pm
• Day finishes - 5.00pm

In addition to these weekly sessions, we will also be running a range of targeted February and Easter revision. Students will be selected for the highest impact sessions for them, and we have identified areas that will be most beneficial to advance progress. Students will receive invites for these shortly.

 Your continued support in encouraging regular attendance to these sessions has been invaluable, and we truly appreciate your efforts in helping your child make the most of these opportunities. These intervention sessions are designed to provide focused support for students in key subject areas based your child’s current academic needs.

In addition this half term, we are also holding a Parental Information Evening taking place on Wednesday 12th March. The evening will be delivered by the Area Team Leaders for English, Maths and Science and will focus on how best to support your child with their revision for core subjects in preparation for the GCSE examinations. Our aim is to provide you with practical strategies and resources to help your child succeed in these core subjects.

The session will run from 6:00 pm to 7:00pm, and we strongly encourage all parents to attend. We hope that, together, we can continue to support your child’s progress and build on the positive steps they are already taking this term.

For the remainder of the school, students will return on Thursday 4th September. To ensure that all students get a welcome assembly to begin their day, we are staggering the start of the day for Year 8, 9 and 10. Students should arrive at school via the main gate as normal at the times below, where they will line up on the playground ahead of their assembly.

Consultation - Proposed Significant Change ‘Closure of Sixth Form’ from September 2025

The sixth form at Cottingham High School, part of The Consortium Sixth Form College, has prepared students for higher education, employment and training with many of our students going on to study at university and has been an important part of the school to date.

Over the last few years, falling numbers in the sixth form have meant that it may no longer be viable to run. It is deeply disappointing that we are writing to formally notify you of the decision to commence a consultation period with regard to a proposed ‘Significant Change’ to close the sixth form provision within our school from September 2025.

As a Headteacher joining the school in January 2024, I am excited to take the school on the next step of its journey, and work with our amazing staff in driving the highest of expectations and consistent standards within the daily lives of our young people.

We are so delighted to announce that we have once again achieved the School Games Gold Level Mark Award for the 2022/23.

The School Games Mark is a Government-led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward and recognise school's engagement (provision and uptake) in the School Games against a national benchmark and to celebrate keeping young people active, and we are delighted to have been recognised for our success.

We are extremely proud of our pupils for their dedication to all aspects of physical activity and school sport, including those young volunteers, leaders and officials who made our events possible. We are committed to using the School Games to try and engage those young people who haven't previously been active or represented our school and to try and ensure that all our students have a positive experience and want to try out new activities beyond school too in our community. We believe in the power of physical activity and school sport as a school and give opportunities to those young people that need it most either as a participant, leader, official or volunteer.

As part of our application, we were asked to fulfil criteria in the areas linked to the five School Games outcomes and we are pleased that the hard work of everyone at our school has been rewarded this year.

A special thanks to the PE department for all your hard work achieving this.

The production not only gave students an opportunity to perform on stage, but it also unites them to share in their enjoyment for developing new skills, collaborate to achieve a shared challenge and build new relationships. By performing to an invited audience of primary schools: Croxby, Hallgate and Westfield, Year 5 & 6 students can experience what opportunities Cottingham High School will give to them when they transition to KS3.  The school will feel familiar to them when they attend, as well as being able to recognise the familiar face of those students they saw perform in the show.

With a bright and early start on Sunday 12th February, our staff and students prepared for their trip to Leysin, Switzerland, including a very smooth coach journey from France to Leysin where they stopped for a well deserved coffee/hot chocolate with a croissant for their breakfast!
