Modern Foreign Languages
The principal aim of the modern languages course is to provide pupils with the tools to communicate effectively in French or German through both the spoken and written word using a range of vocabulary and structures. The study of modern languages provides much more than this however as it allows pupils to develop a unique understanding of how language works, provides insights and develops understanding of foreign cultures, develops positive attitudes towards language learning and equips pupils with a range of transferable skills.
We aim to develop the skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing through a wide range of activities supported by the latest resources to make lessons interesting and highly interactive. Typical lessons involve a mixture of pair and group work and provide students with opportunities to practise and experiment with new material. We believe in developing students’ skills and confidence gradually with an oral approach that encourages them to use the language creatively. As they progress from Year 7 we encourage students to develop their understanding of the structure of the language they are studying so that they can build a firm foundation from which they can progress to GCSE and beyond.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
The outlook is very positive indeed for students who learn modern foreign languages. Employment rates after languages degrees are amongst the very highest. Employers particularly welcome graduates with good communication skills and who can offer one or more foreign languages.
Languages graduates may get involved in education or translating/interpreting, but it is much more likely that they would work in commerce or industry using languages as an extra skill.
