English Literature

English Literature is enjoyable and challenging. It allows the kind of close textual study begun at GCSE to be deepened, extended and developed. The course is delivered in four units, two at AS and two at A2.

At A2 you will be introduced to the central position of narrative in the ways in which literary texts work, involving many different aspects of literary representation. Why do writers choose to tell their stories In such diverse ways? What does the narrative method contribute to the meaning of a text? You will also learn to reflect upon different generic choices and conventions, particularly relating to Tragedy. How has the literary genre of Tragedy evolved over time? Does Classical Tragedy still have meaning in the 21 st Century?

At A2 you will develop your understanding of genre to consider generic conventions more closely, and how and why these might evolve over time. Do we still find Frankenstein scary? If not, why not? You will apply everything you have learned about different critical perspectives in your final unit.

Many students of A Level Literature go on to pursue its study further at University.
